Using a cultural artifact of our choice we worked to create a custom font that emulated the spirit of that artifact. I chose to create a custom display font based on the animated 1973 french film “Fantastic Planet”. The imagery from the movie would serve as the main inspiration for me while designing this font.

Process

Visual Essence

My process began by extracting descriptive words and shapes from my cultural artifact that I felt best captured the essence of its visual style. I started by listing descriptive words I could use for visual inspiration:

Weird
Mystifying
Eerie
Cryptic
Whimsical
Uncanny
Surreal

Mood Board

Next, I used a mood board to pull together images and shapes from the film that I felt best encapsulated its feeling.

From there, I began drafting letters, using these selected images and shapes as a visual influence. My goal when beginning to craft my typeface was to create something that fed off the trippy nature of the film while being visually similar enough to be cohesive.
